Millennium Ecosystem Assessment
Strengthening Capacity to Manage Ecosystems Sustainably for Human Well-Being

About the Subglobal Working Group

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) is a “multi-scale” assessment. The overall assessment will include component assessments undertaken at several different geographic scales, ranging from individual villages to the globe, and the process has been designed so that the findings at any given scale are informed by the assessment components undertaken at other scales. The MA Board established a Working Group in September 2000 to establish the framework and criteria for selecting assessments at multiple scales and to make recommendations to the board for the component assessments. The primary recommendations of the Working Group were approved by the full MA Board on January 4, 2001.

The subglobal assessment component of the MA was reviewed by the Board at its second meeting, January 14-16, 2002. Board members supported the proposed “open-door” policy for bringing subglobal assessment activities into the MA. Basically, any activity that aligns with the essential criteria developed by the Subglobal Working Group can participate in the MA process. That said, the MA Secretariat has and will continue to undertake or support planning activities intended to ensure that a diversity of ecosystem types and problems will be addressed in this process. The criteria and selection process are described in more detail in the document Subglobal Criteria and Selection Process. Assessment activities that have been approved by the Board and will be formally included as part of the MA are described in the “Approved Assessments” section above, as are a number of other “Candidate Assessments” that are currently in process of developing proposals for subglobal assessments.

Additional activities will be considered for “component” status through 2002. Proposals for activities will be welcomed after 2002; however, assessments that are only beginning in 2003 may not be advanced enough by the time findings are needed for inclusion in official MA reports.
