Millennium Ecosystem Assessment
Strengthening Capacity to Manage Ecosystems Sustainably for Human Well-Being

Convention on Migratory Species

The relationship between the CMS and MA was important because it helped ensure that the Assessment would bring the best current scientific information to bear on some of the assessment needs of the Convention. On one hand, the Executive Secretary and Chair of the Scientific Committee were on the Board of the MA and helped ensure that the needs of CMS were reflected in the work of the Assessment. On the other hand, parties to the CMS provided their endorsement of the MA: at COP-7, the MA was invited to collaborate with CMS to determine the benefits MA could provide Parties and the Convention itself.

“With regard to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA), [the Conference of the Parties] invites the MA to collaborate with the Scientific Council to examine more closely how the MA could benefit the Convention and the Parties”, and “invites the Parties and the CMS Scientific Council as appropriate to review the outputs of MA when they are available in 2004-2005”.
