Millennium Ecosystem Assessment
Strengthening Capacity to Manage Ecosystems Sustainably for Human Well-Being

Errata

An error occurred in the presentation of data on land use change in the pre-print drafts of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Synthesis Report and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Board Statement.

  • In the pre-print draft of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Board Statement on on page 8, line 2 and page 11, line 11, the sentence:  "Since 1945, more land such as forest, savanna, and natural grassland has been converted for the growing of crops than in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries combined" should read:  "Between 1950 and 1980, more land such as forest, savanna, and natural grassland has been converted for the growing of crops than in the eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth centuries combined."
  • In the pre-print draft of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Synthesis Report on page 18, line 19 and page 56, line 8, the sentence:  “More land was converted to cropland since 1945 than in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries combined” should read:  "More land was converted to cropland in the 30 years after 1950 than in the 150 years between 1700 and 1850."

An error occurred in the presentation of the figure "Estimated Total Reactive Nitrogen Deposition from the Atmosphere (Wet and Dry) in 1860, Early 1990s, and Projected for 2050" where it appears as Figure 3.19 on page 58 of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Biodiversity Synthesis and as Figure 1.6 on page 36 of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Synthesis Report.  In each of these cases, the map presented for the "Early 1990s" is in error and is missing color layers.  The version of this figure that appears in the underlying technical volume (Policy Responses, Figure 9.9 on p. 585) is correct.

An error occurred in the presentation of the map of the Sahel region in Box 7.1 on page 20 of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Desertfication Synthesis. On this map, the Gambia is incorrectly labelled as Guinea-Bissau.

An error occurred in the presentation of Table 3.1 in the printed copies of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Wetlands and Water Synthesis, "Relative Magnitude (per Unit Area) of Ecosystem Services Derived from Different Types of Wetland Ecosystems", where the column headings for the Coastal Wetlands section of the table are missing. The version of this table that appears in the Adobe Acrobat PDF file of the same report, downloadable from this website, is correct.

An error occurred in the listing of Contributing Authors for Chapter 17: Cultural and Amenity Services of the MA technical volume on Current State and Trends. The listing should include Luisa Maffi.

An error occurred in the text of Chapter 19: Implications for Achieving the Millennium Development Goals of the MA technical volume on Policy Responses. In the final sentence of Section 19.2.10.1 on page 573, "On balance, it seems most likely that cities will continue to grow rapidly, so that by 2020, approximately 4.2 million people corresponding to 56% of the world's polpulation wil live in urban areas (UN 2001; UN 2002).", the figure of 4.2 million people should read as "4.2 billion people".

An error occurred in the caption of Fig 18.18 (p. 500) of Volume 1: Current State and Trends.  The caption should read:  "Comparison of Small-scale and Large-scale Sub-sectors in Global Fisheries, late 1980s. Schematic illustration of the duality of fisheries prevailing in most countries of the world.  This largely reflects the misplaced priorities of fisheries "development" but also offers opportunity for reducing fishing mortality on depleted resources while maintaining social benefits.  The solution here is to reduce mainly the large-scale fisheries. (Based on data from David Thompson and FAO in Pauly 1997).
